A PLACE, A HISTORY
The Riad Dar El Caid Bensaid naturally bears the name of its founder and former owner, Mohamed Bensaid Slaoui, in order to pay tribute to him. He is a descendant of the Bensaid family, established on the banks of the Bouregreg River since the 14th century.
A man of letters and culture, he served as the Caid/Pasha/Governor of Salé for 30 years, from 1862 to 1892.

The Riad, a former family residence from the 19th century, was acquired in 2007 from Mohamed Bensaid Saloui's grandson, Hassan Bensaid, the Caid of the city of Agadir, with a commitment to take care of the place and rehabilitate it. The house remained closed for 10 years until 2017 when heavy rains threatened its stability.
It was at this moment that the renovation work began, lasting for 3 years and involving a large number of artisans, with the instruction to preserve the soul and authenticity of the place as much as possible.

With the work completed, the Riad is now open for institutional events. Guests will enjoy this jewel of Moroccan architecture and be welcomed in an environment that immerses them in the memories of traditional houses of our ancestors."

In the autumn of 2021, the French Institute of Morocco had the pleasure of collaborating with Riad Dar El Caid Bensaid for a writing and podcast workshop with the writer Abdellah Taia and producer Alexandre Plank, dedicated to the city of Salé. No one could have dreamed of a better place than this enchanting historic location, conducive to creativity, offering diverse spaces and the necessary tranquility for discussions and listening. The magic of this fully renovated riad and the quality of its services unquestionably contributed to the success of this project, which resulted in the creation of an audio documentary.
FRENCH INSTITUT OF MOROCCO
Since its restoration, Riad Dar El Caid Bensaid in Salé has become a prominent cultural destination in the city. We had the pleasure of organizing several cultural events there, in collaboration with the National Circus School, including A'Tabadouls, a professional platform by Karacena, during the Karacena Biennale 2022. Over three days, numerous programmers from around the world gathered to take stock of the state of African and global circus, as well as participate in roundtable discussions on new circus dramaturgy, with Moroccan and foreign panelists in June 2023.
Riad Dar El Caid Bensaid has been meticulously restored in complete harmony with the Moroccan architectural tradition, displaying care and taste, and we were warmly welcomed by the project's founder and her team on every occasion. Its spacious layout makes it a perfect venue for cultural events, in a distinctly Moroccan setting, and both Moroccan and foreign visitors have been enchanted by the place.
Above all, Riad Caid Bensaid addresses a significant need for dedicated cultural space in the city of Salé, particularly within the medina, and we are delighted by the riad's existence and its contribution to the city's radiance.
